Voice Typing in Slack

Dictate messages, reply to threads, and keep up with conversations at the speed of speech. Steno turns your voice into text in any Slack channel on Mac.

Why Voice Type in Slack?

Slack is where modern teams communicate, but keeping up with dozens of channels and DMs throughout the day can wear your fingers out. The average knowledge worker sends 40+ Slack messages daily, and each one requires switching context from whatever you're working on to a tiny text box.

With Steno, you can respond to Slack messages 3x faster than typing. Instead of breaking your flow to compose a reply, you simply hold a hotkey, say what you mean, and release. Your spoken words appear as clean, punctuated text in the Slack message field. No copy-pasting, no switching apps, no friction.

Most people speak at 130 to 150 words per minute but type at only 40 to 60 WPM. That gap means voice typing lets you clear your Slack inbox in a fraction of the time. Curious how much faster you could go? Try our typing speed test to see your current WPM.

How to Set Up Steno for Slack

1 Install Steno on your Mac

Download Steno from stenofast.com. The installer takes about 30 seconds. Steno lives in your menu bar and uses virtually no system resources when idle. Check out our setup guide if you need help.

2 Open Slack and click on any text field

Open the Slack desktop app or Slack in your browser. Click on the message input in any channel, direct message, or thread. The cursor should be blinking in the text field.

3 Hold your hotkey, speak, release

Hold the Steno hotkey (default: Right Option key), say your message naturally, and release the key. Your transcribed text appears in the Slack text field within a second. Hit Enter to send.

Slack Workflows You Can Voice Type

Dictate Channel Messages

Click on any channel's message box and hold your hotkey. Speak your update, status report, or question. Steno transcribes it with proper punctuation and capitalization. For longer messages, you can dictate in multiple segments — each time you hold and release, new text is appended at the cursor position.

Reply to Threads Instantly

Thread replies are where the real work happens in Slack. Click "Reply in thread," hold your hotkey, and speak your response. This is especially useful when you need to write a detailed reply but don't want to slow down your current task. Voice typing lets you give thoughtful responses without the cognitive overhead of composing text manually.

Quick DM Responses

Direct messages often require fast, informal responses. With Steno, you can fire off replies the moment you read them. Open the DM, hold the hotkey, say "Sounds good, let's sync at 3 PM," and release. The message is ready to send in under two seconds.

Search Slack by Voice

Slack's search is powerful but typing search queries breaks your flow. Click on the Slack search bar, hold your hotkey, and speak your search query. Steno types it out and you can hit Enter to search. This is particularly handy for searching long project names or specific phrases you remember from a conversation.

Draft Longer Updates

Weekly updates, project summaries, and announcements often run several paragraphs. Typing them out takes 5 to 10 minutes. With voice dictation, you can draft the same update in 2 to 3 minutes. Use Steno's voice commands to say "new line" or "new paragraph" to structure your message as you speak.

Pro Tips for Voice Typing in Slack

Use voice commands for formatting. Say "new line" to add a line break within your Slack message. This helps you create structured messages with bullet points or separated paragraphs without touching the keyboard.
Dictate, then edit. For important messages, dictate the full content first, then do a quick visual scan and make minor edits with the keyboard. This hybrid approach is still much faster than typing everything from scratch.
Works in Slack Huddles chat too. When you're in a Slack Huddle and need to type something in the chat sidebar, Steno works there as well. Hold your hotkey and speak — your text appears in the huddle chat input.
Set up text snippets for repeated phrases. If you frequently type the same Slack responses (like "I'll take a look and get back to you" or "Let's discuss in standup"), set them up as Steno text snippets for instant insertion.
